Core Value # 3: Virtue should be honoured
This practice will help to eliminate and minimize ‘jealousy’
This sort of view advocates any form of practice which praises pr honours the virtues of others. To give some examples:
- Chinese people gather at the grave of their parents to value all the virtuous teachings given by those parents during their life;
- British people valuing the goodness of Shakespeare who laid the foundation of English literature;
- Americans valuing how Abraham Lincoln managed to overcome slavery in the United States;
- Thai Buddhists give alms to the minks, because they see the monks as the greatest teachers of ethical values known to the world.
we are training ourselves to observe goodness in others.
It should be noticed that this third form of core value aims at valuing the goodness of a person rather than the person themselves-it is more than mere hero-worship. Having this sort of core value imploes that a person values virtue more than money, and that the value of a person depends not on their race, gender, age or creed, but on the their level of virtue. It even includes hospitality to guests, opening our doors and our hearts to guests, in the hope that we can absorb additional virtues from them. It is a form of view that will lead a person to seek out and respect others. This practice will help to eliminate and minimize ‘jealousy’ and ‘envy’ among people because we are training ourselves to observe goodness in others. Thus, giving with respect and acknowledgement in the others goodness surely brightens up our minds and wisdom, and we will be able to proceed to understand the next form of core value.
