Filtering Out False Friends

Our human environment

The majority of people around the world from the Lord Buddha’s time until now have been under the misconception that success and failure in life depend mainly on the environment around them. Many traditional ceremonies were originated in different places in the world to worship the more awesome aspect of the environment. For example, the aboriginals worship fire, sun and the moon. The Ancient Egyptians worshipped ‘Ra’, the Sun god, believing that it could bring them prosperity. They called upon these natural elements to protect them as well as to bring them happiness and wealth.

The Lord Buddha too, pointed out the importance of the environment around us. He classified the environment into two parts:

1. Our human environment: the people around us, namely the six groups we refer to as the ‘Six Directions’;

2. Our natural environment: including trees, mountains, forests and the atmosphere;

The Lord Buddha regarded our human environment as a factor which influences one’s mind, values, attitudes, and habit formation. In contrast, he regarded the natural environment, i.e. things which physically support our survival, health and well-being-whether it be food, water, air and medicine, as affecting our physical development and longevity.
