He Loved Performing Merits But He Also Liked Cock and Fish Fighting, Where Did He Go After Death?

Dear Luang Phor,

I am a student of the Dream in Dream Kindergarten School through DMC program. I am in Surat Thani Province. I would like to send my Case Study about cock fighting for people to learn about it.

My grandfather was the head man of the village and an ancient herbal doctor, who cured patients with herbs. He had built a recuperation clinic in the area of his house that was like a small sized hospital. He was so nice; he loved cultivating merits, went to the temple, rescued poor people, and was sincere and enterprising. He had a lot of land and followers that were his assistants who would plant for him. He gave half of the profits to support his patients. He liked to support children who had no parents and help them to be ordained. It seemed like his life was very clean. He was like a hero in every matter. Contrarily, his bad habit was that he loved gambling such as boat racing and cock and fish fighting. There were ten fighting cocks around the house and a lot of fighting fish jars on the shelves.

He went to the cockpit once a week and he was lucky in this game. His fighting cocks were very famous and they never surrendered because of two reasons; they had excellent fighting rhythms to clearly squash the opponent, and the other reason was he never let his cocks surrender; if he saw that his cock was going to lose the battle in the fighting situation, he would jump in and carry it out before it died in the cockpit, so that his cocks never lost a battle in the fight. He would not kill them but they would be cured and taken care of. Then he would train a new excellent cock, who would fight in the cockpit. He was into cock fighting until he became sick from throat cancer. His symptoms resembled the cock’s after fighting, he was tired and had to gasp for breath; he coughed up blood and had a lot of sputum. He passed away at 80+ years old. It was strange that all of his cocks and fish died one by one after his death.

My father was a fisherman. He had to go out to the sea in the evening and come back at dawn from fishing, and he bound big live sea crabs for sale. He actually did not like that occupation because he had been ordained for 5 years and became the liaison for the temple. There he had learned a lot about misdeeds and merits; he knew by his own heart that it was creating kammic retribution. But he had to earn income from many sources to take care of his 9 children. He promised that he would give it up if the children grew up and would be able to take care of themselves. He really made that desire come true. Even though someone gave him a big live fish, he ignored it and did not kill one again. When he became old, he became sick from severe blood vessel pain; he felt stiff and ached, he had to cry out when he moved, he was tortured, and no masseur could cure him. He also had diabetes, high blood pressure and heart infarction. He died at the hospital at the age of 69. When he passed away, my brother was sleeping near him, and he felt that he was awakened by someone to let him look at our father, but when he woke up he found that father had already passed away. Another strange event happened on the sixth day after his death, there was a swarm of bees who flew into the chanting ceremony and perched at the loudspeaker, but they did not do harm to anyone and flew back in the morning. It was doubtful as to where they came from and why. The swarm of bees came again when my brother was ordained for my father after his death.

My niece was a daughter of my younger brother (the seventh child). My second elder sister loved and had a motherly feeling for her. She took care of her since my niece was born. My niece was lovely and clever but naughty. When she was one year old she put the plug of the oxygen supplier for the fish bowl into her mouth. She became shocked and her brain lacked oxygen for a while. She became paralyzed, could not help herself, could not talk, had to eat only liquid food, and defecated in her bed. She died at 10 years old.

My brother, a Bhikkhu, was the youngest child (the ninth child). While my mom was pregnant she could eat only rice and syrup. When he was born he could not open his eyes like other children until the seventh day after his birth. He was easy to take care of but always got into accidents with water and nearly died twice, but was rescued in time. As for the second accident, my mother had to fumble for him under water three times. Finally he was found after she made a wish that she would die with her baby if she could not find him.

As for myself, I have a take-out order restaurant. I have two problems; my employees always resign and I have to support my husband’s brother who spends his money idly and always creates debt.

Questions

1. My grandfather was so nice but why was he fond of cock and fish fighting? What misdeeds caused him to get sick from throat cancer? What was the image that appeared in his mind just before he passed away? Where is he after death? Did he receive the dedicated merits? Does he have any message for us?

2. What was the misdeed that caused my father to get sick from severe blood vessel pain, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart infarction? Did he wake my brother up after he died? Where did the swarm of bees on the sixth day of chanting and ordination ceremonies come from? Was this related to my father’s death? How is my father doing? Does he receive the dedicated merits? Does he have any message for us?

3. What was the deed that caused my sister to ask her to take care of my niece for my brother? Did they have any relation in the past? What was the misdeed of my niece to be electrically shocked and become paralyzed for 10 years? Where is she now? Does she receive the dedicated merits?

4. Why could my mother only eat rice and syrup while she was pregnant my Bhikkhu brother? What were the misdeeds that caused him to not open his eyes when he was born and to get into an accident to nearly drown him two times?  What perfections had my brother Bhikkhu pursued with our Community? Why was he ordained?

5. What misdeed caused my employees to always resign and caused me to have to support my husband’s brother? What should I do to make him get established by himself?

6. How did I pursued perfection with our Community? How can I have a better life and follow our Community to pursue perfections thoroughly?

Luang Phaw's Dream

I closed my eyes, dreamed and woke up with these answers.
When you tell anybody the story like a tale, it will make anyone know more about retribution (Law of Kamma)

1. Your grandfather was so nice but had to be in the cock and fish fighting social circles because of the misdeeds of association with knaves in the previous life. It was their tradition to go to cock and fish fighting.

  • Your grandfather got sick from throat cancer because of the past misdeeds of cutting cocks and other animals’ throats when he was in an agricultural family, and from the present misdeeds of cock and fish fighting as his part time activity.

  • Before he passed away, he saw the pictures of merit and misdeeds alternately; cock and fish fighting alternated with merits. This made his mind not so clear so that he was reborn as a high class half-bird half-human angel at the Himawanta Forest of Catummaharajika Heaven (a famed forest in the first level of Heaven).

  • The dedicated merits resulted in more Heavenly treasures such as more fine celestial food and a brighter body. His message is that he wants more dedicated merits to release him from the merit and misdeed mixing condition and to be reborn in a higher class.

2. The misdeeds that caused your father to get sick with severe blood vessel pain, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart infarction were his present kamma of binding and killing animals for food. He was reborn as a handsome high-class Yakksa (ogre) in a golden mansion of Catummaharajika Heaven (the first level of Heaven). He has no fangs except when he gets angry, and that is because of the merits of five years of ordination, which got the upper hand over the demerits.

  • If your father was ordained by following the tradition he would be reborn as a merman. He did not wake up your brother.
  • The bees were not related to anything; they came by chance.

  • The dedicated merits resulted in him being in a better condition. His message is thank you for all the dedicated merits, especially to the youngest son who has been ordained with intention, which makes him most delighted.

3. Your sister wanted to have a child, so she adopted her niece; they were mother and child in the past life.

  • Your niece was maimed from an electrical current shock for 10 years because of her kammic retribution; in her past life she was your brother’s child, as a fisherman she liked to shock fish by an electrical current.

  • The merits of joining the chapel construction of the temple in the village in her past life protected her from not going to hell; she was reborn as a human to make amendments, but the retribution of fish shocking followed her and it resulted in her receiving an electrical current shock since she was young.

  • She is reborn as a human again; she cannot receive the dedicated merits.

4. When your mother was pregnant with your youngest brother she could eat only rice and syrup because in the past life your brother was born in a rural area. There was a wandering Bhikkhu who came to settle his Dhutanga umbrella (strict, austere practice of the Bhikkhus). In the morning the Bhikkhu came for receiving almsgiving but the cooking was not finished, so his almsgiving was only rice and syrup for 3-4 consecutive days.

  • Your brother Bhikkhu could open his eyes on the seventh day after birth, which is normal for some babies.
  • He was nearly drowned two times because in the past life when he was teenager he liked to annoy his friends and nearly drown them while swimming. Once his friend was nearly drowned to death, but was able to be helped, so he did not have the retribution of drowning to death.

  • Your brother Bhikkhu was a soldier of the king who was ordained, and he was ordained following the king, since he was young and remained so throughout his life. In that life he attained the Dhammakaya within, resulting in him being ordained since he was young in this life.

5. Your employees always resign because in the past life you had less merits of persuading other people to cultivate merits.

  • You do not have to think too much about supporting your husband’s brother; it is about assisting your relative. You have to teach him to practice being self-sufficient; starting from teaching him to do all kinds of giving (Dana), observe Precepts strictly (Sila) and meditate (Bhavana).

  • Your husband’s brother performed less donations in the past life, so he did not become successful in his work and business. He has to make a decision against the roads to ruin (Abayamook) that is the cause of disaster.

6.You were the supporter of our Community; you always made merits according to your mood. Let’s cultivate all sorts of merits for the rest of your life; you will have a better life and will follow our group to Tusita Heaven (the 4th level of Heaven), in the Special Merits Zone together.

Case study in real life

The Law of Kamma (Pali:Compared to "Karma" in Sanskrit) segment or "Case Study" is one of the prominent sections on the Dream in Dream kindergarten program, conducted by the Venerable Phrarajbhavanavisudh, also known as, Luang Phaw Dhammajayo of the Dhammakaya Temple in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand.

Each individualized "Case Study" is based on the timeless Law of Kamma (the Law of Cause and Effect) which examines the reasons for many situations and complex inter-relationships people find themselves in. Viewers from around the world write personal letters to Luang Phaw wanting to understand the karmic reasons for many special circumstances in their life.

This program is not intended to convert anyone to Buddhism or any other religions persuasion. Rather the goal is to help spread genuine peace, happiness and understanding here in Thailand and around the world. By first discovering and cultivating inner peace within ourselves through meditation, we can help spread love and kindness outward, helping to make our world a better place for everyone.
