Underlying Objective of Dividing Society into Six Sectors

world

No-one in the world is perfect.

No-one in the world is perfect. Therefore we must know how to interact with the different social groups around us in order to pick up the positive core values we lack from them. The six different groups reflect the six different sets of needs and expectations. There is no person in the world who lives in a social vacuum because there are always times of life when we have to rely on others for our survival. We are therefore social beings-we live together and work together. Some may wonder whether there is any special significance in dividing society into six sectors-and whether society could be divided into a greater of lesser amount of sectors instead. The six sectors of society represent the basic minimum of possible relations hips by which a normal person can subsist. The underlying objective of the six directions is to clarify the responsibilities and duties which we need to practice towards those in the six sectors. In turn, by fulfilling our responsibilities in these respects, we have certain ‘rights to help’ which we can expect from people in those six sectors –there is a degree of reciprocity.

We are therefore social beings-we live together and work together.

Thus for each class of relationship, everybody has duties which they must honour and rights which they are due in return. If by contrast, a person was required to invest energy blindly in duties towards others irrespective of what they received in return, it would certainly breed discontent. If such discontent should become more serious, that person might abandon their duties altogether.

Because each sort of relationship has different details to its reciprocity, the Lord Buddha divided society into six sectors, each with its own associated duties and rights – the details of which will be examined in the remainder of this chapter.
