Once in my life...From Howard McCrary

To My Beloved and Most Holy Venerable Father Luang Phaw Dhammajayo,

As I come near the end of my training, I am amazed at how little I knew of what it takes to be a monk. To think what you, Luang Phaw Datta (Vice Abbot) and all the Venerable have gone through to become the mighty men you are today. I never knew of training this intense! Ever in my life!!
My only regret is that I didn't do this sooner than now.

Now I understand why every man should experience this at least once in his lifetime. This has made a much better man out of me.
I have learned to pay closer attention to details and to be mindful every waking moment. I have learned to respect and appreciate others. I have learned that one cannot lead unless he knows how to be led of follow instructions. I have learned that to have the right view is critical to survive. I have learned that compassion is strength under control. I have learned patience is a precious commodity that only the wise can truly value. I have learned all this from my center. I have experienced a camaraderie and solidarity from my brothers in the Dhamma like I have never known before. When the service for cutting our hair took place I felt deeply touched in my heart. That love was for you my father, the same love we all have for you for providing us with the opportunity to become warriors of light and universal love.

Beloved Father Luang Phaw with my heart and life I thank you and your most capable staff, Luang Phi Tony, our mentors, and teaching monks for showing us by example what it means to be men of valour, courage, integrity, honor, patience, and wisdom.

I have learned principles, morals and values based on the teachings of Lord Buddha that will change me for the rest of my life. We have all religions and races represented here, in this monastic International community of brothers from around the world. We have found and been taught if we can change… the world will change.
Thank you for allowing us the privilege to understand what being a monk is all about. It’s not easy but it is well worth the challenge.
Also I’ve never seen such detailed and competent organization. Every aspect is taken care of in mindfulness.
Dear father I am learning how important spiritual excellence is for the first time.

I needed this training more than I ever knew.
Your ever devoted son,
Howard
