Meditation for Beginners

The Good Friend must be Scrupulous

Perseverance
Perseverance: meaning a diligence and determination having set one’s mind

The most time-consuming activity in a person’s life is to earn a living. How should a true friend earn a living, one may ask? The Lord Buddha said that a person can earn a living if they possess the following three virtues:

- Perseverance: meaning a diligence and determination having set one’s mind on a task one should not give up until the work is completed no matter how difficult it is;

- Finding a niche: One should find a niche for oneself that is appropriate to the time and place one finds oneself in. Those who can do that will definitely earn money for their living.

- Resilience: Resilience which means a person who is physically strong and does not give in easily to environmental hardship, no matter how demanding the job might be;

Friend
However, to be self-disciplined, a person must be surrounded by True Friends

Applying the above three characters, one can always earn a living no matter what and without having to take unscrupulous shortcuts, nor does one need to earn a living from illegal work or work that causes one to take advantage of others. A True Friend can earn their living throughout their life without it coming into conflict with the ethics taught by the Lord Buddha. Many people in our society today, no matter how educated, rich or privileged, cheat and trick others and even break the law just to earn quick and easy money. What we hear about in the news in terms of illegal dealings, corruption, merchandise piracy, drug trafficking and so on, are only the tip of the iceberg compared to all the unscrupulous dealings that go on.

Nonetheless, the Lord Buddha announced and insisted that a good person who can keep the Five Precepts and who works honestly and diligently to earn their living and who knows how to manage his earnings and manage it well will definitely become wealthy like:

“…the bee building a hive-the wealth is sure to increase like the mound fashioned by a termite"

Being able to keep Five Precepts until it becomes second nature, one must be self-Precepts until it becomes second nature, one must be self-disciplined. However, to be self-disciplined, a person must be surrounded by True Friends, which again illustrates the great benefits of having true friends.
