A court has been told a devout Buddhist convicted of attempted murder plans to confess more crimes to police so he will not go to hell.

Huy Xuan Le, 31, has been in jail in South Australia since 2005.

He was convicted of attempted murder for shooting a man in the back over a suspicion the man was sleeping with his girlfriend.

Le is now being sentenced for stabbing two men during a fight in 2005.

The District Court heard one of the men's injuries were so severe his intestines were protruding.

Le's lawyer Michael Waye told the court his client suffered from schizophrenia and was heavily addicted to drugs at the time of the crime.

He said Le was a devout Buddhist and planned to confess more crimes to police to clear his conscience so he would not end up in hell.

He will be sentenced for the stabbing later.

In Buddhist teachings, there are a number of hells which differ from the Christian concept.
