ดูก่อนภิกษุ เราตถาคตจะยกอุปมาให้เธอฟัง สมมติว่า มีภูเขาศิลาลูกใหญ่ยาว ๑ โยชน์ กว้าง ๑ โยชน์ สูง ๑ โยชน์ ไม่มีช่อง ไม่มีโพรง เป็นแท่งทึบ มีบุรุษผู้หนึ่งนำเอาผ้าขาวบางมาจากแคว้นกาสี แล้วเอาผ้านั้นลูบภูเขา ๑๐๐ ปีต่อครั้งหนึ่ง การที่ภูเขาศิลาใหญ่แท่งนั้นจะถึงความสิ้นไป เพราะความพยายามของบุรุษนั้น ยังเร็วกว่าระยะเวลาหนึ่งกัป ภิกษุทั้งหลาย พวกเธอท่องเที่ยวไปมาอยู่ในวัฏสงสาร มิใช่ ๑ กัป มิใช่ ๑,๐๐๐ กัป มิใช่ ๑๐๐,๐๐๐ กัป เป็นเพราะว่า วัฏสงสารนี้กำหนดที่สุดและเบื้องต้นมิได้
