ณ นครสาวัตถี นอกฤดูพรรษาหนึ่งก่อนที่เหล่าภิกษุสงฆ์จะออกจาริกไปเผยแผ่พระพุทธธรรมตามนิคมแว่นแคว้นต่าง ๆ ชาวพระนครก็มักกราบอาราธนาพระพุทธองค์เสด็จรับภัตตาหารที่บ้านเรือนตนอยู่มิได้ขาด ครั้งหนึ่งทรงรับนิมนต์คหบดีเจ้าของสวนผลไม้ จึงเสด็จนำหมู่ภิกษุสงฆ์ไปตามการอาราธนานั้น ชาวสวนผลไม้จัดพระพุทธอาสนะให้พระพุทธองค์ประทับภายในเคหสถานของตนพร้อมกับพระเถระผู้ใหญ่
