Core Value # 7 : We are endebted to our mother
a person acknowledges his or her debt of gratitude to his mother.
This seventh form of core value indicates that a person acknowledges his or her debt of gratitude to his mother. Buddhists in all traditions in the world acknowledge that they have a huge debt of gratitude to their mother, giving rise to the Buddhist proverb: ‘If you were to take the world as your pen and the sky as your paper, using the water in the seven oceans as your ink, even if you were to write down all the good things a parent has done for their child until all the water in the ocean were exhausted, one would still not have come to an end of all the things for which a child is endebted to their parents,” Even so , to appreciate the debt of gratitude one has to one’s mother for having been brought up, is only a positive core value at a very elementary level.
However, the debt of gratitude a child has to their mother ectends far beyond this, to include
The devotion of the mother apparent to the naked eyemight be nothing more than the kindness and perseverance exhibited in bringing a child up to adulthood. However, the debt of gratitude a child has to their mother ectends far beyond this, to include:
- The gift of life;
- Birthin human form (rather than as some inferior form of animal);
- The human blueprint for our mind (because she is the one who has brought us up in a way that we have become instilled to a greater or lesser extent with pesitive core values).
Those who possess all six of the forgoing forms of core values will usually have no difficulty in appreciating their debr of gratitude to their mather.
