Meditation for Beginners
What are the Characteristics of Untrained Mind?

They are selfish and never care about the rest of society.
When the mind is obscured by defilements, it is constricted
like being imprisoned in a small dark room. Just as one who is imprisoned alone
becomes paranoid about possible dangers, the first impulse will be to save his
own skin.
In the same manner, for those who have their minds obscured
by defilements, they are either selfish or co-operate only if it better allows
them to manipulate others to their own benefit.

The untrained mind tends to lead to a narrow-minded personality
The untrained mind tends to lead to a narrow-minded personality,
because one cannot broaden a mind darkened by defilements. They act without due
forethought and simply think that they can please themselves, even though those
actions may annoy and irritate others and destroy the wholesome culture of the
society.

allows them to manipulate others to their own benefit.
Their actions might even be in contravention of morality and state
laws, but they find loopholes in the law in order to make benefits for
themselves. In other words, those who have untrained minds are wont to
recklessness. They do not have a sense of responsibility towards the well-being
of other members of the society and nation. These people are even capable of
betraying and nation. These people are even capable of betraying their nation for
the sake of their own wealth, power, position, and rank.

In brief, those who have untrained minds
We might say that those who with untrained minds are unable
to distinguish the difference between behaviours that are right or wrong, good
or bad, appropriate or inappropriate. They are selfish and never care about the
rest of society. These people perform their duties shoddily and tend to take
advantage of others, given the opportunity. Their behaviours are not different
from savages. In brief, those who have untrained minds are truly unaware of the
responsibility toward their own human dignity.
