Abstract: The Date of Kanishaka Era by Samawadee CHAROENSRISET In the year that King Kanishka of the Kushan dynasty ascended his throne, he established the new Kanishka era and enforced it to be officially used in his empire for a long time. Knowing an accurate date of the Kanishka era is an important key to arrange and link many events in Indian history, especially in the early period of Mahāyāna Buddhism. However, there is no clear evidence or conclusion to determine the accurate date of this era. In this article, I have restudied this issue by raising and investigating additional evidence which is newly discovered e.g. inscriptions, Chinese history records, and other relevant evidence. According to the investigation of this evidence, I have reached the conclusion that the year of 134 C.E. should be the most possible date for the Kanishka era.
