Translator's Introduction I was indeed honored when I was approached to undertake this translation. It has not always been easy for me to keep in touch with my Buddhist heritage, having been born in Europe, and having grown up outside of Thailand. Nevertheless, I have the greatest respect for my religion, and all that is has brought into my life. Even from a very young age, I often wondered who these men were, monks dressed in their colorful saffron robes; their serene presence having an effect on me even then. Over the years, as I learned about the teachings of the Lord Buddha, I grew to appreciate more and more, the gifts of my faith. Therefore, I hope that this translation will bring you clarity, and a greater understanding of a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation for more than 2,500 years. Ordaining is not merely a rite of passage, or a ritual rooted in antiquity. It has proven itself over the centuries to be a timeless and valuable practice for those who wish to have a greater understanding of life, death, suffering, and truth. On a practical level, ordain-
