สรุปเนื้อหา

In exploring why individuals may choose to ordain as monks, four key circumstances are highlighted: old age, illness, poverty, and social rejection. These situations often drive individuals to seek refuge in monastic life. The Raja notes that Rathapala, a young, healthy man surrounded by support, makes the decision to ordain despite lacking these vulnerabilities, reflecting a deeper inquiry into motivations for ordination beyond mere circumstances. Historically, many have ordained even without faith in Buddhism, emphasizing the complexity of personal choice in spiritual journeys. This creates a curious consideration in understanding the diversity of motives behind monastic commitments, as highlighted during the time of Lord Buddha.

ข้อความต้นฉบับในหน้า

the Raja inquired why a person might ordain, the response he was given, was as follows. When confronted with one or all of the following four circumstances, a person usually seeks refuge in the monkhood 1. Old Age - The deterioration of one's physical state and abilities, finding that your life has no more roads to journey on. 2. Illness & Disease - When one's body and health is afflicted with some illness and you are unable to move forward in the world. 3. Poverty - When you reach that point in your life where you no longer have monetary resources to advance your life. 4. Shunned by Society - When your peers or those in your community no longer accept you One or all of these circumstances often push people to turn towards a life of refuge in the monastic community. The Raja commented that Rathapala was not yet old, he was still strong and healthy, living a life free from poverty and surrounded by many family and friends who loved and respected him. Why then, has he chosen to be ordained? In ancient time, many men chose to be ordained when confronted with four circumstances, although they had no faith in religion. Even during the time of Lord Buddha, many people were ordained without faith in Buddhism. It is therefore not surprising that the Raja found Phra Rathapala's decision to be ordained, a curious thought indeed.
