CASE  STUDY
Don’t Let the Liver Ache And Don’t Die

I pay my highest respect to you, Luang Phaw

Although I had left Thailand for California in 1983, a kalyanamitta had introduced me to the path to pursuing perfections with the group. Since then, I have meditated and accumulated merit at the Dhammakaya International Meditation Center in California every week and watched the DMC channel regularly ever since it began broadcasting on the internet.  The first time I saw Luang Phaw, he looked very bright and graceful. Tears fell from my eyes with happiness. I also cast a personal Buddha image inscribing the name of the Great Abbot Luang Pu, Luang Phaw, and Khun Yay. I donated for the building of the concrete pile of Maha Dhammakaya Cetiya, the pillars in the Meditation Hall, and other merits which I did according to my might or at my full might, including those merits I did myself and invited others to do.

My family had once owned a rice mill in the Banglen subdistrict, Banglen district, in Nakorn Pathom province. At that time, our financial status was good. But later, with the economic crisis, we generated a loss and sold our business.  Instead, we had a new business of raising pigs. We began from raising a few pigs to expanding our business to around 3,000 to 4,000 pigs.   We also traded rice and food for animals. Our finances had improved once again. We continued the business for 10 years. But after that, the market price for pork fell. So we generated a loss and slowly gave up the business.

My father was a temperamental, easy to anger, impetuous person. He had 2 wives. My mother was his main wife and lived with my father until death parted them. They had 8 children. My father did not have time to make merit at the temple, but whenever someone told him about a merit project, he would join in creating merit with them. He never objected when I created merit with the temple.  But, since he was Chinese, he tended to prefer worshiping or make offerings to the Chinese supernatural spirits rather than making merit at the temple.

My father became paralyzed for a period of time, but he was cured and healthy again. Before he died, he had chest pain for a few days, couldn’t eat much, and passed away on the last day of 1995, at the age of 72.

My mother loved her children very much. She was healthy and liked to release fish. Although she had never gone to the temple, she offered alms and worshiped Chinese supernatural spirits everyday. Later, my mother had a stroke. At that time, she couldn’t help herself and always needed someone to assist her to move around. Before she died, she was ill. She could not even hold a spoon and could not eat for several days. We took her to the hospital. My mother died peacefully at the hospital at the age of 82.

My oldest brother loved all his family members. He was a calm person, but never was successful in life. Any business he had, whether it was selling auto parts, fish farming, or a longan nursery garden, he was never able to build up his wealth.  He died at the age of 49.  On that day, he and his son drove to the longan garden.  He had a headache, so he let his son do the garden work alone while he rested in the car instead.  When his son returned to the car after work, he found that his father was unconscious and his body had turned green. He did not know what caused his death.

My third oldest brother had owned a motorcycle repair shop, but was also not successful as it did not generate enough income. So he turned to open a restaurant with his wife. But he died shortly after that. On the day he died, he went to take a bath. But we felt that it had been too long since he went it there, so we went in to see. We found him lying on the floor, already having passed away, at the age of 41.

My youngest brother has 2 children from his first marriage. He lived in Bangkok, but when he had problems with his wife, they separated.  Later, he moved to work in Ubon Ratchathanee province. He married again and had 2 children. My youngest brother worked for a company. He sometimes had to entertain and take his clients overseas, or sometimes he had to go to Bangkok for a seminar, so he hardly had time for his wife and two children.

One day, he unintentionally killed a person by running his car into that person. He was really frightened, but fortunately, his company took care of the charges, preventing him from going through any legal proceedings.

He was an economical person and had good manners. We never knew that he had financial problems until the police tried to catch him in Banglen district. We found out that he cheated his company out of its money. And we later learned that, his wife lost all that money in gambling and cheated on him as well.

During that time, he had to avoid the police, but he came to visit his children sometimes. With problems with work and his family, he ended his life with suicide. He mixed poison into milk for his 10 year old son and 5 year old daughter and then poisoned himself to death after that.  He left a letter to his wife apologizing for bringing her burden. Fortunately, someone took them to the hospital. The doctor was able to detoxify my brother, but he was in the ICU for 6 days and passed away.  His son died immediately. His daughter survived.

Although I did not have a difficult time with money, I had a difficult time with my body.  I used to stand at work for 8 hours for 10 straight years because I was a controller for a machine at a factory.  Four years ago, my legs hurt so much. The doctor recommended taking pain killers for joints.  I took pills everyday, but the problem still occured intermittently.  I thought I just had a nerve problem. Then, in May 2003, my legs swelled and hurt so much.  If I bent my leg inward, I could not move my leg back.  I went to the doctor and the doctor said the ligament was torn and I needed an operation.  The procedure was, cutting 2 small openings, putting a camera in one opening and a tool in the other opening.  After the operation, the doctor said that it was not a 100% cure, as I have had this problem for a long time.  The tissue was way too torn to be fixed and I might need a new knee.  Instead of taking better care of myself, when I changed jobs, I came back to standing, controlling a machine for 8-10 hours a day, 7 days a week.  I don't know if I am abusing my body too much.

Questions

1.  What kamma caused my family to be wealthy from a rice-mill business in the beginning, but ended up suffering a loss having to sell the business? Later, we raised pigs until we were wealthy again, but suffered a loss and sold the business again. What merit did we make for the successes to happen? What is the scale of the kammic retribution for raising pigs for sale but not killing them?

2.  What kamma caused my father to hurt his chest and was unable to eat before he died. What kamma caused my mother to die from cerebral hemorrhaging? Where did they go after they died? Are they facing difficulties? Did they receive the merit dedicated to them?

3.  Why was my oldest brother not successful in life? What kammic retribution caused to him to sleep and pass away in the car? What was his vision before he died? Where is he now? I donated to cast a Buddha image for him before he died. How did the merit help him?

4.  My third oldest brother was not successful in life just like my oldest brother. Was it from a similar kammic retribution? Why did he die? Where is he now? I donated to cast a Buddha image for him before he died. How did the merit help him?

5.  What kamma did my younger brother do, causing him to face many problems which influenced him to commit suicide by poison? Why did he have an unfaithful wife?

6.  My younger brother drove and ran into a person, killing him. What merit helped him not face a penalty by law? What will his kammic retribution be? How can he correct it?

7.  What kamma did my nephew do causing him to die because his father? Does he want revenge? Where did he go after he died? What merit do I need to make to help him most?

8.  When children kill their parents, it is considered one of the Five Heaviest Sins. But what is the difference in sin when parents kill their children?

9.  What kamma did I do causing me to have a torn knee ligament, and even after surgery, I still have to stand at my new job? What do I need to do or what merit do I need to make in order to be cured without going through a knee replacement surgery, and so that I can have a long, healthy life?

9.  How have my siblings and I pursued perfections with the community? Currently, I am the only one who goes to the temple. What can I do to persuade my siblings to come to the temple? Why did I come to know the temple so late in life? What can I do so that I will meet the community sooner in my next life?

Finally, I deeply appreciate your kindness. I wish you good health and a long life so that you can remain as the moral support to us, Dream in Dream Kindergarten students around the world forever.

Luang Phaw's Dream

I closed my eyes, dreamed and woke up with these answers.
When you tell anybody the story like a tale, it will make anyone know more about

retribution (Law of Kamma)

1.  Your family’s rice mill business was good at the beginning, but then your family had to sell the business. Later the pig farm business was good at first but then generated a loss at the end. This is because in your past lives, your family members made merits inconsistently. Sometimes they made merits and sometimes they did not. So, they experienced the ups and downs of life.  When the merit takes effect, the business will be prosperous, but when the merit runs out, the business will decline.

  • By raising pigs and selling them for slaughter, the killing kammic retribution will be lesser than those who kill them. For example, the person who kills the animal will have illness and a shorter life, but to a lighter degree.

2.  Before your father died, he had chest pains and could not eat, due to his demerits of raising animals for slaughter. In addition, he had reached the natural end of his life.
  • After he died, he was taken to Purgatory, in the killing realm of hell, due to the demerit of raising animals for slaughter and sometimes ordering the slaughter of animals to make food to worship sprits. Currently, the officers of hell are torturing him by cutting and slicing at him. He has died and been reborn painfully many times. The merit you dedicated to him has helped lessen his punishments.

  • Your mother died of a stroke, due to the demerit of raising animals for slaughter, just like your father.
  • After she died, the merit took effect before the demerit of supporting your father in raising animals for slaughter. She was reborn as an earth sprite, at the medium to upper level. But after she received the merit you dedicated to her, she became an earth sprite at the upper level.

3.  Your oldest brother did not succeed in life, because the demerit of being stingy took effect when his accumulated merit subsided. So, he was never successful in any matter.
  • He slept and died in his car because of a stroke. This is because he had reached the natural end of his life, combined with the demerit of raising animals for slaughter in his past lives, similar to the demerit his father had in this life.
  • After he died, he received the merit of casting a personal Buddha image you dedicated to him, so he did not have to go to the unfortunate realms.  He wandered around for a period of time and has already been reborn as a human on earth. So, now he can not receive merit at this time.

4.  Your third oldest brother was never successful in life. This is due to the demerit of being stingy taking effect when his accumulated merit had subsided.  So he could never be successful in anything, like his oldest brother.
  • After he died, he received the merit of building a personal Buddha image you dedicated to him, so he did not have to go to the unfortunate realms.  He wandered for a period of time and has already been reborn as a human on earth. So, now he can not receive merit at this time.

5.  Your younger brother experienced problems in his life and committed suicide by poison. This is because of the demerit of associating with fools who enjoyed gambling. He used to encourage his friend to have an affair with another person’s wife.  So in his present life, he had a wife who gambled and had an affair, causing him frustration and causing him to commit suicide by poison. This is a new demerit of his present life.

6.  Your younger brother drove a car into a person, causing that person to die. But he did not have to face a penalty by law because in his past life, he had helped bail a friend out of prison by bribing an officer. So, this is considered both merit and demerit that helped him get out of a penalty by law.  But the kammic retribution will cause him to die from a car accident. He will have a disease of the blood as a result of the bribery.

  • To correct this, you should accumulate merit and dedicate the merit to your younger brother frequently. When he is reborn as a human again, he will have to correct his misdeeds by himself.

7.  Your nephew died as a result of his father, because of your nephew’s demerit from his past life. He had put poison in the animal cage of his enemy with anger, so all the animals died. This is a new killing demerit for his father.
  • After he died, he did not have any great malice with his father, because he did not know his father caused his death. He has already been reborn as a human on earth and can not receive merit dedicated to him at this time.

  • Your niece survived because of the demerit of poisoning, like your nephew, however, she had merit in offering medicine to monks and the merit of supporting society and her relatives. This intervened in her reduced kammic retribution, as she has died of poisoning for many past lifetimes now.

8.  Children killing their parents are considered to be one of the Heaviest Sins. But parents who kill their child will receive different kammic retribution. The Heaviest Sins have severe kammic retribution. But since parents give life to their children, killing their own children is considered a lower degree of killing demerit. But its retribution can still cause a shorter life and death at a young age.

9.  You have a torn knee ligament and even after surgery, you still have to stand at your new job. This is due to the demerit of exploiting the labor of one of your workers in your past life until he/she had a torn knee ligament and then still had to continue working for you.
  • You should find a new job which allows you more movement. You should accumulate every merit by being generous (dana), observing precepts (sila), and meditating (bhavana). You should dedicate these merits to those that you have hurt or exploited. And you should make resolutions to be free from this kammic retribution.

10.   Your siblings had pursued perfections with the community on a small scale, but since they don’t have much merit connection with the community, you should put more effort in persuading them.
  • You had pursued perfections with the community as a “supporter,” sometimes according to your mood, sometimes leisurely, sometimes according to your might, sometimes with all of your might.
  • In the present life, you should correct yourself by pursuing perfections with all your might and making resolutions to meet the community quickly in your future lifetimes.

  • Having met with the community in this lifetime, you should strongly intend to pursue perfections with all your might in every merit and make resolutions to follow the community to the special merit zone of Tusita heaven, in the Bodhisatta area. Do not allow yourself to stray.

Case study in real life

The Law of Kamma (Pali:Compared to "Karma" in Sanskrit) segment or "Case Study" is one of the prominent sections on the Dream in Dream kindergarten program, conducted by the Venerable Phrarajbhavanavisudh, also known as, Luang Phaw Dhammajayo of the Dhammakaya Temple in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand.

Each individualized "Case Study" is based on the timeless Law of Kamma (the Law of Cause and Effect) which examines the reasons for many situations and complex inter-relationships people find themselves in. Viewers from around the world write personal letters to Luang Phaw wanting to understand the karmic reasons for many special circumstances in their life.

This program is not intended to convert anyone to Buddhism or any other religions persuasion. Rather the goal is to help spread genuine peace, happiness and understanding here in Thailand and around the world. By first discovering and cultivating inner peace within ourselves through meditation, we can help spread love and kindness outward, helping to make our world a better place for everyone.
