Dukkha or Suffering as Created by Conditioned States ทุกข์เกิดจากปัจจัยปรุงแต่ง (continued) John : So what do you mean by 'visual consciousness? Sam : It's just a philosophical term indicating the idea of 'seeing'. Seeing does not mean recognizing, right? John : OK. It's like when we see something but don't identify what it is. Sam : Right. The other forms of consciousness are the same, an auditory consciousness, for example, is simply awareness of the presence of sound, not anything like what we could call personal experience because there is no recognition of the sound. John : So how is our personal experience produced? Sam : Our personal experience is produced through the functioning of the other three mental factors of experience : the aggregate of feelings, perceptions and mental formations. John : These three aggregates function to turn the mere awareness of object into personal experience, is that right? Sam : Yes. Now let's look at the second group -- the Aggre gate of Feelings. It is of three kinds : pleasant, unpleasant and indifferent. When an object is experi- enced, that experience develops one of these three emotional states, either the reaction of pleasure, displeasure or indifference. And there are six kinds of feelings experienced through the contact of physical and mental sense organs with the external world. John : Sam, so there are two groups of feelings, the group of three which refers to emotional states while the other group of six refers to the experiences arising from the contact between physical and mental sense organs and the external world, is that right? Sam : Yes, now let's discuss the third group, the Aggregate of Perceptions. The function of perception is to turn an unidentified experience into an identified and meaningful experience. There are six kinds of perceptions: 1) color such as blue, green or red, 2) sound such as loud or soft. 3) odor such as sweet, putrid or pungent.
