4) taste such as sweet, sour or bitter,
5) sensation of objects such as hot, cold and hard or
soft.
6) qualities of objects such as beautiful, ugly.
John : I see, it is like when we hear a siren, most of us think
of an emergency vehicle, such as a fire truck or
ambulance. It is perception that recognizes an object.
Sam
: Yes, now let's look at the Aggregate of Mental Forma-
tions. Mental Formations are actually volitional activi-
ties both good and bad. They are the same ideas as
kamma' (intentional deeds), The Buddha said,
"O bhikkhus, it is volition that I call 'kamma'. Having
will, one acts through body, speech and mind." The
function of volition is to direct the mind to perform good
or bad or neutral acts. Thus, volitional actions produce
kammic effects, either good or bad or neutral.
John : What about the Aggregates of Feelings and
Perceptions, do they produce kammic effects?
Sam : No, they're not volitional actions. They are responses
to objects. Now, let's look at the last group -- Conscious
ness. Consciousness is a response which has one of
the six sense organs as its foundation, and one of the
six corresponding external elements as its objects. For
example, visual consciousness is a response to the
eyes reacting to a visible form, auditory consciousness
is a response from the ears experiencing sound as its
object.
John : Consciousness arises from conditions and ceases when
there are no more conditions, is that right ?
Sam : Yes, consciousness changes when the condition has
changed.
John : Consciousness is therefore impermanent
Sam : Not only consciousness but all of the five aggregates
are impermanent. They are just processes, not static
things. In Buddhism, the word 'being' or 'I' is only a
convenient term for these processes.
John : So a 'being' or 'I' is impermanent.
Sam : Definitely. That is why the Buddha said,
"The Five Aggregates of Attachment are Dukkha".
John :
I see, Sam, the Five Aggregates does help us
understand that "Dukkha or suffering as created by
conditioned states".
Sam : See how Buddhism is realistic?
John : Absolutely, Sam, I really appreciate your explanation.
Thank you very much.
Sam : It's my pleasure.
