The Need for Spiritual Values in Social Development
By: Ven. Dattajeevo Bhikku
I would like to start by conveying my thanks to
the organizers for the honour and the opportunity of
speaking today before this distinguished assembly. We
are here today to discuss the topic of the environment
and resources necessary for social development. We
have already heard a lot from our other distinguished
panelists concerning the world's social problems. It has
made me very pleased to hear such a legitimate and
expert appraisal of these problems and possible material
solutions to these problems. All of these contributions
are important to all of us, even those like myself who
comes from a spiritual community in a developing coun-
try.
Every problem in our world has a human face.
Even the droughts from which some parts of the world
suffer have recently been shown to come from the hu-
man influence of those who are destroying the rain-
forests. Every problem has a material and a spiritual
part to it. Even human nature has not only material
aspects - it has a spiritual aspect too. The material and
human aspects of the human nature are inseparable.
I would hate to think of anyone walking out of
this meeting still thinking that one-sidedly to find material
solutions to any social problem is enough. If I can
contribute something of value to this conference by my
