the ears with sound, the nose with odor, the tongue

Sam : That's right. But physical elements by themselves
are not enough to produce experience. Let's talk
about the eyes. When the eyes contact or observe
an object, there needs to be a connection between
the eyes and visible objects for the eyes to see.
John : You mean the eyes don't create the experience?
Sam : Right, it is the coexistence of consciousness along
with the eyes and the visible objects which
produce the experience. For example, a person
while sleeping might sleepwalk or have you ever
known someone to sleep with their eyes open?
The person who is asleep with their eyes open may
be seeing objects in their environment, but there is
no recognition of the objects. It's as if his
consciousness is asleep just like the sleepwalker
being unaware of his surroundings.
John : I get it, consciousness is necessary in the
production of the experience.
Sam : Very good, that's true. Now you're getting the idea
about the relationships between the various sense
organs and their objects.
John : But what is consciousness?
Sam : Your consciousness is your mind and your thoughts.
John : What about the mind? Does it have corresponding
objects, too?
Sam : Yes, the mind is a mental sense organ. It has
ideas or thoughts or concepts as its objects.
John Therefore, a 'being' has six sense organs: five
physical sense organs and one mental sense
organ.
Sam : That's right. But it should be clearly understood
that consciousness does not recognize an object.
It is merely an awareness, that is, an awareness
of the presence of an object. So when the eyes
contact a color, say, green, visual consciousness
arises which is awareness of the presence of a
color : but it does not recognize that it is green.
There is no recognition at this stage.
It is perception, the third aggregate, which
recognizes that it is green.
