expertise, I hope | can at least contribute a spiritual
dimension to it so that we can strike an equilibrium
between the material and spiritual issues involved.
It follows, therefore, if we are dealing with social
problems, that we have to deal with both the material
and the spiritual aspects of those problems - for ex-
ample, if we are dealing with the human face of poverty
we must look at material poverty hand in hand with
spiritual poverty. If we are to look at the effects of
extreme material poverty, we need to balance it by look-
ing also at the effects of extreme spiritual poverty too.
Maybe this can help us to distinguish between likely
solutions to help the 'homeless' of our developed coun-
tries in a way that might be different from the way we
deal with the 'homeless' in our developing countries.
Often in social development we have difficulties
in developing a vision of the sort of world we would like
to see in a way which is practicable to implementation
and the generation of transformative behaviour. Often it
is hard for our vision of the world to escape the influ-
ence of values dictated by market forces.
In the ideal world our values should be free
from such material-based influences. Our values should
incorporate a vision of what we are aiming for in social
development both in terms of material and spiritual well-
being. Not only must the two considerations go hand in
hand, but we need to find ways to connect the two and
be able to come to a new world view and a new set of
values where our standpoint is both materially and spiri-
tually correct.
The future of our societies is both spiritual and
material because even in the materially wealthy nations
of our world, there are still many suffering from spiritual
poverty - those spiritual paupers suffer most seriously
from a badly eroded system of values.
Therefore our society is in dire need of
