John : Sam, the other day you said the concept of
Dukkha or suffering may be understood in three
different ways.
Sam : Yes, do you have time to talk about them
now?
John : Sure, I'm interested.
Sam : Do you remember the three aspects of
Dukkha?
John : I think so, let's see,
(1) Dukkha as ordinary suffering,
(2) Dukkha as suffering produced by change,
(3) Dukkha as suffering created by conditioned
states.
Sam : Great, you have a good memory.
John : Thanks, now tell me more.
Sam : All right, Let's start with ordinary suffering,
What do you think ordinary suffering would be ?
John : Maybe death, sickness, homelessness and
being out of a job.
Sam : That's some of them, there's more like
separation from loved ones, favorite things and
places; grief, loss, associating with unpleasant
or hurtful persons, things or conditions;
disappointments and not getting what is
desired, even birth and of course, old age.
John : Could we say that all forms of physical and
mental distress which are generally known as
pain or suffering are included in Dukkha as
ordinary suffering. ?
Sam : That just about sums it up.
John : No one can avoid these sufferings.
Sam : See how Buddhism is realistic.
John : No doubt about it.
