These turned against him and spread mudslinging gossip. Some even tried to harm him physically. The situation deteriorated to such a point that drunks got intoxicated in the temple precincts and misbehaved, even going so far as to think of plunder and murder as the bhikkhus were meeting in conclave. One night eight men came along with the intention of disposing of Luang Phaw altogether, even as he was in the meditation hall. One of the bhikkhus on watch went out in defence. Hearing the disturbance, Luang Phaw went out to prevent him. “We bhikkhus must never fight nor run,” he said. “This is the only way to win at all times.” The ruffians backed off into the darkness.¹ On another night Phra Kamol,² a disciple who Luang Phaw praised for his astuteness in giving sermons, was to teach on a subject connected with meditation for the general public. That night Luang Phaw sat in the front row of the hall listening to the sermon too — a compliment in itself to the monk’s teaching ability. On this occasion, Phra Kamol climbed up onto the pulpit (dhammaśāna). He picked up the palm-leaf scriptures that were to be the subject matter of his sermon. He had only just announced the year³ when a gunshot rang out in the hall. Phra Kamol hastily --- ¹. from ibid. p.11-12 ².
