Wat Mahathat was also punctilious in visiting the sick Somdej. One evening when Chao Kuhn Bhimolthamm came to call, the Somdej appealed to him to prepare the long-awaited papers for electing Luang Phaw as Preceptor. It was not long after that that the long awaited seal of approval as Preceptor was rightfully bestowed on Luang Phaw. As soon as the new title was received, the number of ordinations held at Wat Paknam increased manyfold. Each day, particularly on Thursdays, hundreds of the faithful would come to Luang Phaw for spiritual help. There were many examples of Luang Phaw Wat Paknam healing the terminally ill. All those whose condition was hopeless would be brought to Luang Phaw by their relatives. Luang Phaw’s most advanced students would ascertain the cause of the illness through meditation. If the patient was approaching the end, his disciples would say so. If the reason for the illness was the ripening of the effects of past evil deeds, they would heal the illness by having the patient perform an act of major merit to escape the clutches of his past evil karma. If the reason for the illness was physical, they would use the power of meditation to adjust the patient’s internal functioning along with the administration of herbal medicine. He always maintained that he did not ‘heal’ the patients of their illness through meditation, but simply removed the illness from their bodies. Although Luang Phaw always helped so many people, he always taught that the most amenable to recovery were those already well-versed in meditation.
