"That clear sphere is the beginning (pathama magga). It is the path of the Blessed One whereby He attained Nirvana. It is the only path, the straight path; there is no other path. Remember this; never let it perish from your sight." With these words, he gradually extracted the yellow under-robe from the folded bundle of robes and placed it round the ordinand’s neck.1 "Go now and robe yourself, and return to receive the Triple Refuge..." The ordinand looked up at the clock and saw that he had been sitting amidst the monastic assembly for an hour and a half. For him alone Luang Phaw had gone out of his way to show him how to meditate, to show him the path whereby defilements are shed, to enter the coolness, shade and wisdom that is the Buddha Sāsana.
