A Temple in Wartime
When you need happiness, you should bring your
mind to a standstill. Stopping is the manifesta-
tion of success — it is the real happiness, to which
the happiness of no other thing can compare.
(Phramonkolthepmuni)
At the outbreak of World War II, Luang Phaw showed
a lively interest in the news. The war changed the lives
of everybody who lived in Bangkok and the temple
was no exception. There was considerable danger for
everybody who lived in the capital. This was the only
time in the history of Wat Paknam when Luang Phaw
did not teach meditation for the general public inside
the main Vihara of the temple itself. During the Second
World War, because of the possible danger for public
attending teachings, especially on Thursdays, Luang
Phaw moved the venue for public meetings to the house
of Nah Saiyud Peankersuk which was not far from the
temple precincts.
During World War II, Luang Phaw felt that it was not
safe for the monks of Wat Paknam to go on almsround.
The monks, however, always had enough to eat because
the kitchen provided for them. Also Luang Phaw would
instruct Kuhn Yay Chandra to have the meditators in the
temple invoke the Grace of the Perfections of the Dham-
makāya to provide sufficient food for the temple com-
munity each day. He was certain that each day, there must
always be someone of faith to support the temple and
he instructed the meditators to facilitate the opportunity
