One day in the afternoon, as Luang Phaw was receiving guests, a dark-skinned man of Indian descent, called ‘Bang’, came to visit having heard Luang Phaw’s reputation. He bowed down in respect to Luang Phaw and asked if someone ‘of the likes of himself’ were to try meditation, whether he would have any chance of attaining Dhammakāya. Luang Phaw said that he had a good chance because he must already have performed a lot of perfections in his past to have gained the chance to meet up with Luang Phaw. Where most people would have interpreted this as flattery, Bang trusted Luang Phaw’s judgement and questioned Luang Phaw further by asking, “So how many more days will it take me to attain the Dhammakāya?” Luang Phaw sat in meditation for a moment and answered, “If you sit in meditation for an hour a day, it won’t take many months.” Bang responded disappointedly, “Does it have to take as long as a month? I’m returning to India tomorrow! Can’t I attain Dhammakāya today?” Luang Phaw sat in meditation for another instant, then opened his eyes and said, “It’s possible — but there are certain conditions. You must sit for meditation with me here. For as long as I don’t leave off from the meditation, you mustn’t move. Alright?” “Okay,” Bang agreed.
