(เมื่อประทับนั่งลงบนอาสนะแล้ว พระบรมศาสดาจึงตรัสถามปัญหาภิกษุหนุ่มโดยเริ่มตั้งแต่ ปัญหาเกี่ยวกับปฐมฌาน ทุติยฌาน สมาบัติ ๘ รูปภพ และอรูปภพ ตามลำดับ) ...The younger monk could answer these questions correctly... (ภิกษุหนุ่มก็สามารถตอบคำถามได้ถูกต้อง....) ...Then the Teacher asked him a question about the Path of Conversion, and he was unable to answer it.... (ครั้นแล้ว พระบรมศาสดาจึงตรัสถามปัญหาเกี่ยวกับโสดาปัตติมรรค, ภิกษุหนุ่มตอบไม่ได้) Thereupon the Teacher asked the older monk, and he immediately gave the corrcet (พระบรมศาสดาจึงตรัสถามภิกษุสูงอายุ ท่านก็ทูลตอบได้ถูกต้องทันที) The Teacher then asked questions about the remaining Paths in order. (พระบรมศาสดาจึงตรัสถามปัญหาเกี่ยวกับมรรคที่เหลือ) The younger monk was unable to answer even a single question while the older monk was able to answer every question. (ภิกษุหนุ่มไม่สามารถตอบคำถามได้ถูกแม้แต่ข้อเดียว ในขณะที่ภิกษุสูงอายุตอบได้ทุกข้อ...) On each occasion the Teacher praised him, and so did all the deities and gods of the World of Brahmā. (เมื่อพระภิกษุสูงอายุตอบถูก พระบรมศาสดาก็ทรงประทานสาธุการทุกครั้ง เหล่าเทวดา และพรหมก็ช่วยสาธุการด้วย) พระบรมศาสดา) Hearing this praise, the pupils and fellow-residents of the younger monk were offended at the Teacher. (เมื่อได้ยินสาธุการเช่นนั้น เหล่าอันเตวาสิกและสัทธิวิหาริกของภิกษุหนุ่ม ต่างรู้สึกไม่พอใจ They then asked Him why He praised the older monk who knew nothing at all, (จึงทูลถามพระบรมศาสดาว่าเหตุใดพระองค์จึงทรงยกย่องชมเชยภิกษุสูงอายุซึ่งไม่รู้อะไรเลย) and why he gave no praise to their teacher who knew the sacred words by heart and was at he head of five hundred monks.
