นทนาธรรมยามว่าง ดวงธรรม The Impressive Temple วัดที่น่าประทับใจ (be continued) Jack : Well, what about the Dhamma teachings at this temple? Tom : I did read some books on Buddhism before I came to Thailand. Even though the language in those books was not too difficult, I only had a surface understanding of its deeper meaning. Now I better understand its more profound meaning from the interpretative sermons preached by the late Abbot of Wat Paknam and the current Abbot of this temple. According to the current Abbot, everyone has two main duties : the first one is the study of the Dhamma both its theories and practices. The second one is to earn a living. Jack : I've never heard such teaching before. Well, just think about it. If everyone devoted all their time and energy for meditation and Buddhist studies, Who would be left to develop the country? Tom : This is an interesting point. At first I couldn't accept his ideas like you but after a long period of meditation practice, I realized what he preached. Jack : It's something strange for Westerners. Tom : Yes. But if we can't grasp these ideas, we can't glean the ultimate benefit from Buddhism. Why so? Uh..... do you know the ultimate goal of Buddhism? Jack : Is it nirvana? ๑๑๖ กัลยาณมิตร กุมภาพันธ์ ๒๕๔๓ (ต่อจากฉบับที่แล้ว) แจ็ค : การสอนธรรมะที่วัดนี้เป็นยังไงครับ ทอม : ก่อนมาเมืองไทย ผมได้อ่านหนังสือด้านพระพุทธ ศาสนามาบ้างแล้ว แม้ว่าภาษาในหนังสือเหล่านั้นจะ ไม่ยากเกินไปนัก ผมก็เข้าใจแต่เพียงผิวเผินเท่านั้น แจ็ค : ทอม : เดี๋ยวนี้ผมเข้าใจความหมายในระดับลึกของพระพุทธ ศาสนาดีขึ้นจากการอธิบายขยายความของพระเดช พระคุณหลวงพ่อวัดปากน้ำและท่านเจ้าอาวาสของวัดนี้ จากพระธรรมเทศนาของท่านเจ้าอาวาส ท่านสอนว่า คนทุกคนมีหน้าที่สำคัญ ๒ ประการคือ หน้าที่ประการ แรกได้แก่ การศึกษาธรรมะทั้งภาคปริยัติและปฏิบัติ หน้าที่ประการที่สองคือการทำมาหาเลี้ยงชีพ ผมไม่เคยได้ยินคำสอนแบบนี้มาก่อนเลย ลองคิดดูซิ ว่า ถ้าทุกคนทุ่มเทเวลา และพลังทั้งหมดเพื่อการทำ ภาวนาและศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนา แล้วใครล่ะจะมาทำหน้าที่พัฒนาประเทศ นี่เป็นจุดที่น่าสนใจ ตอนแรกผมก็ยอมรับความคิดนี้ ไม่ได้เหมือนกันแต่หลังจากปฏิบัติสมาธิภาวนานานเข้า ผมก็เข้าใจสิ่งที่ท่านสอนอย่างลึกซึ้งครับ แจ็ค : เป็นเรื่องแปลกสำหรับชาวตะวันตก ทอม : ครับ แต่ถ้าเราไม่เข้าใจความคิด (คำสอน) เหล่านี้ เรา ก็ไม่สามารถสั่งสมผลานิสงส์อันสูงสุดจากพระพุทธ ศาสนาได้ ทำไมจึงเป็นเช่นนั้น อ้อ...คุณทราบเป้าหมาย สูงสุดของพระพุทธศาสนาไหมครับ แจ็ค : นิพพาน ใช่ไหมครับ
