Tom : Yes.
Jack : What does it mean exactly?
Tom : Well, let's avoid this word for now. It'll be easier
to understand if we use the word "liberation" or
“freedom” instead. They are synonyms for
nirvana. I like the word freedom--freedom from
the Cycle of Existence. Do you want to be
free ?
Jack : Of course. Everyone wants to be free.
Tom : It would make sense if we assume that the
world of samsara is like a prison. Basically, all
human beings are in prison and no one can
avoid suffering. After we die, we are reborn
again and again endlessly.
Accordingly, we become imprisoned endlessly
as well. This is why we need freedom from the
Cycle of Existence.
Jack : How can we free ourselves?
Tom : By getting rid of all of our innate defilements
and craving that cause us to be trapped in the
Cycle of Existence. The only way to get rid of
them is to practice the Threefold Training, namely,
morality, mental development, and wisdom.
in other words, we have to study and practice
the Dhamma as our first duties. To earn money
is our second duty.
Jack : The Abbot seems to teach people to be
ascetics.
Tom : I quite agree with his teachings. If we devote
ourselves to worldly things rather than to
spiritual things, we will never experience
ultimate or real freedom. As long as we are in
the Cycle of Existence we cannot avoid
suffering no matter what status we have, or how
many possessions we possess.
Jack : Even though it sounds optimistic, it is realistic,
I think.
Tom : I've also been impressed by the other
activities that this temple provided for people
visiting it.
