The Noble Truth of the End of Dukkha นิโรธ Sam : John, would you like to talk about the Third Noble Truth, today? John : OK, the Third Noble Truth is the end of Dukkha, Sam : John : right? Yes, yes it is. Last time, you said the cause of Dukkha or Suffering was craving. Sam : Right, it's necessary for us to uproot and to put an end to our craving in all respects so that our rebirths will end. And when we stop the causes of Dukkha, then Dukkha will completely end too. In this way we will attain liberation. The liberation from Dukkha is Nirvana in Sanskrit or Nibbana in Pali, which is the ultimate goal of Buddhism. John : Sam, for one who attains Nibbana, will he live in this world or will he die? Sam : Well, according to Buddhist texts, there are two kinds of Nibbana, namely, Nibbana with existence in the physical body and Nibbana without any physical body remaining. John : Could you give some more the differences between these two kinds? Sam : Let's take the Buddha as an example. During the period of forty-five years, beginning from the day he attained enlightenment as a Buddha, and propagated Buddhism throughout the rest of his life, to the day he passed away is the first kind of his Nibbana. After his passing away, known as the Great Demise of the Buddha is the second kind of his Nibbana. John : The first kind of Nibbana refers to the state of an Arahant or a Buddha who is still living ; but the second kind of Nibbana refers to the state from which an Arahant or a Buddha passes away. Sam : So, the second kind is the final release from the round of Rebirth. John : By the way, the other day I came across some Buddhist proverbs, one is “Nibbana is the highest bliss." What's the real concept of this proverb?
