Sam : In my view, this Buddha's saying refers to Nibbana
of an Arahant who is still living. The bliss of Nibbana
is highest because it is completely unaffected by
defilements such as greed, hatred, or delusion. An
Arahant himself is in the state of calmness, that is,
Absent of craving, attachment and suffering. John,
do you remember the Buddha's saying, “The five
aggregates of attachment are Dukkha?"
John :
Yes, we talked about this in the topic of the First
Noble Truth.
Sam : An Arahant is free from the five aggregates of
attachment, that's why he is in the state of the
highest bliss.
John : Despite using the same word 'bliss, the state of
happiness of an Arahant is likely to differ from that
of general people.
Sam : Sure, the bliss of general people arises from sensual
pleasures but the bliss of an Arahant is his state of
detachment from sensual pleasures, being far away
from Dukkha. Although I never experience it, I'm
sure it is superb.
John : Another proverb is “Nibbana is the highest void."
Do you have any idea about this proverb?
Sam Sure, the key word in this saying is 'void'. It might
be assumed that this word can have two meaning
: 1) void of all defilements and craving, that is,
Nibbana is the extinction of all defilements and
craving. 2) void of words in human languages to
describe the state of Nibbana even though the
Buddha affirmed that there is what we call Nibbana.
He said, “That Ayatana... refers to Nibbana, (that)
is not earth, water, fire or wind : ....not this world
nor any other world; not the sun nor the moon;
without any coming or going, or existing; without
dying nor taking birth; it depends on nothing; ......yet,
there is that Ayatana -- it is the end of suffering.
John : It seems that Nibbana is formless. To tell you the
truth, I can't imagine what Nibbana is like.
Sam : Actually, Nibbana is beyond logic and reasoning. It
is to be realized only by the wise who attains high
spiritual development to a certain extent.
John : The question is, how we can attain that state?
Sam : The Buddha already gave the rules of practice known
as the Path. We'd better talk about it next time.
John : That's a good idea. Thank you very much, Sam.
