๒๘ กัลยาณมิตร SHANE DYE A NOVICE FROM NEW ZEALAND ATTAINS TO DHAMMAKAYA S EXPERTISE IN MODERN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY progresses so the ignorance of religious values amongst materialists becomes more impenetrable, especially, when the religion concerned is not firmly based on rational foundations. It is therefore no surprise these days, to hear the majority of people say "I'm not interested in religion!" However, those who claim to be without faith often can accept Buddhism on philosophical ground, gives the chance to study this religion. Often those willing to train themselves to practise Right Concentration suddenly find that they are amongst the most realised followers of Buddhism. Buddhism is a religion of rationale and Truth. It teaches us to understand the World and life as they really are. It contains all the principles needed to reach its ultimate goal, namely, Nibbana. The well-known student exchange programme called The American Field Service (A.F.S.), aims to support teenagers from different countries to gain international understanding by learning about tradition, culture and people of their visited country. More than a decade ago, there were some foreign students in this programme who became interested in Buddhism so much that they asked permission to be ordained at various temples in Thailand. A novice called Shane Dye, 17 years old, finished high school, is one of the fourteen students, in this programme, from New Zealand. He arrived in Thailand on March 13, 1988, and went to Pran Buri School, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, in the southern part of Thailand. In spite of his short period of acquaintance with Buddhism, he embraced the Buddhist faith. Then he was allowed to be ordained at Wat Pran Buri on November 2, afterwards, on November 8 transfering to Wat Phra Dhammakāya. His reason to be there was: Wat Phra Dhammakāya has a good name for meditation. (An interview conducted and edited by Suwanee Srisopa) Kalyanamitra.org มกราคม ๒๔๓๒
