a divine being. This kind of person believes that exist-
ence in the Brahma world is permanent, where there is
no decay and death. Such a person therefore devotes
his life to application leading up to high mystic
attainment.
John : Sounds good. Why is his practice regarded as the
cause of suffering?
Sam : It's his craving which is the cause of the suffering.
If one craves for continued existence, he pays no
attention to Nibbana, which is the extinction of craving
and thus, suffers pain.
John : I get it, because craving for existence is the holding on
to the sense of 'I' or 'myself'.
Sam : Right, this relates to the five aggregates of attachment
which is suffering. By the way, let's look at the third
type of craving, shall we?
John : Alright, would it be craving for non-existence? What
does it mean?
Sam : It's a contrast to the second type of craving, but it also
has two types :
John :
Sam :
1) the desire not to be or not to remain in such and
such a condition and 2) the desire not to be reborn
again in this world but in the Formless or Immaterial
Sphere.
What does it mean by the first kind?
Well, let's take the case of a new sailor. He is really
enthusiastic and happy when his ship sets sail toward
the tranquil ocean because his dreams are coming
true, to be precise, his desire for seeing adventure is
being gratified. But later he finds life at sea as intoler-
able for various reasons. He, then, is troubled by the
desire not to be a sailor.
John : So craving for non-existence follows the effect of exist-
ence-craving.
Sam : Yes, that's the first kind. It's common experience in
our daily life.
John
:
What about the second kind?
Sam : According to their high mystic attainment, some practi-
tioners believe that the souls of the beings in the Form-
less Sphere will be completely annihilated after they
die, and hence won't be reborn any longer. So they
won't face suffering any more.
John : So they crave to be delivered there.
Sam : Right. Because in Buddhism the state of no-rebirth or
Nibbana is the end of desires and cravings.
John :
But as long as you crave for both existence and non-
existence, your rebirth will never end.
Sam : Definitely.
John : Thank you very much, Sam, I really appreciate your
explanation. I rejoice in your merit.
