One day, the mother was not feeling very well, so she asked Tanome to go and cook food and offer it to the monks. Tanome had to get up and go into the kitchen to prepare food. In the cupboard she found yesterday's leftover rice, fish and bananas. She did not prepare new food and brought this leftover food to the monks. The next morning her mother had recov- ered from the illness and did her own cooking again. Time passed by. Ten years later, Tanome's mother was not well again, but this time she knew she was going to die. She called Tanome and re- quested that her daughter promise something before the death: to al- ways feed the monks. Tanome was afraid that her mother would die and agreed to the request. Later her mother did die. Tanome forgot her promise to her mother. One day, when she had reached the age of 20, she slipped at the top of the stairs and fell all the way from the first step down to the lest. She was unconscious for days. People thought that she had alredy died and put her in a coffin. While all the monks were chanting for her funeral ceremony, they heard a bawling noise from the coffin, ask- ing for water. They ran to the coffin and opened it and found that Tanome was not dead.
