A FOREIGNER'S IMPRESSION OF BUDDHISM IN THAILAND Mrs. Nancy Hyson is a middle-aged Thai business lady who immigrated to the United States about twenty-one years ago. Although she has been quite successful in her career, she accepts that riches itself cannot really make her live a happy life. According to her views, our sufferings or happiness depend on our thoughts or mind. She thinks that the poor who have experienced inner satisfaction with what they have may feel happier than the rich who are always seeking for more and more materialistic things. With regard to her realistic view of life and of the world, Mrs. Hyson tried to probe into the right and practical way for leading her way of life, especially, those of her two beloved daughters. WHY DOES SHE BELIEVE IN BUDDHISM? Mrs. Hyson believes that everybody must have a religion because the teachings of every creed or faith are aimed to help us lead good lives. However, for herself, she specially believes in Buddhism. This is not because she was born a Thai but because... "Buddhism is superior to other religions in several ways. Let us consider the founder of Buddhism-the Lord Buddha. He was just a human being. He did not claim to be God, or his incarnations in different forms. He did not claim to be inspired by any god or external power either. But his teachings are superior to any other human being. The Lord Buddha did not compel anyone to believe in him. He merely encouraged and stimulated each one to develop himself to free himself from the cycle of existence. The Lord Buddha only laught or guided us the way...we have to work out our own emancipation as the Lord Buddha's said "One is one's own refuge." คุณแนนซี่ โฮสัน เป็นนักธุรกิจสตรีไทยวัยกลางคน ซึ่ง ไปตั้งรกรากอยู่ในสหรัฐอเมริกานานถึง ๒๑ ปี และได้รับความ สําเร็จในงานอาชีพของเธอเป็นอย่างดี แต่เธอก็ได้ประจักษ์ถึง ความจริงในชีวิตว่าลำพังแต่ฐานะทางเศรษฐกิจอันมั่งคั่งนั้น ไม่ สามารถดลบันดาลให้ชีวิตของคนเราประสบความสุขอันแท้จริงได้ เพราะเธอมีความคิดว่า เรื่องสุขหรือทุกข์นั้นสำคัญที่ใจ คนจน ที่มีธรรมะคือปฏิบัติธรรมจนรู้ธรรม เห็นธรรม จิตใจสงบเยือก เย็น กลับมีความสุขมากกว่าคนรวยที่จิตใจเร่าร้อน ด้วยเหตุนี้ คุณแนนซ์ จึงได้แสวงหาแนวทางอันถูกต้อง ดีงาม เหมาะสม และสามารถปฏิบัติได้ เพื่อเป็นหลักในการดำเนินชีวิตใน สังคมอันนับวันแต่จะทวีความสับสนยิ่งขึ้น และโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ธิดาสาววัยรุ่นสองคนอันเป็นที่รักยิ่ง ดั่งดวงชีวิต เหตุใดจึงมีศรัทธาใน พระพุทธศาสนา คุณแนนที่มีความเห็นว่า คนทุกคนต้องมีศาสนาประจำใจ เพราะว่าทุกศาสนาล้วนแต่สอนให้คนเป็นคนดีทั้งสิ้น แต่สำหรับ ตัวเธอเอง เธอกล่าวว่าเธอมีศรัทธาในพระพุทธศาสนาเป็นพิเศษ ไม่ใช่เพราะว่าเธอเกิดเป็นคนไทย แต่เพราะว่า.... “พระพุทธศาสนามีความพิเศษกว่าศาสนาอื่น ๆ อยู่ หลายประการ นับตั้งแต่ สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าผู้ให้ กำเนิดพระพุทธศาสนา พระองค์ก็เป็นมนุษย์ธรรมดา มิได้ อ้างตัวว่าเป็นพระเจ้า หรือเป็นพระเจ้าแบ่งภาคมาเกิด หรือ เป็นผู้ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากพระเจ้าหรืออำนาจศักดิ์สิทธิ์ แต่ประการใด แต่ทว่าสมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าได้ตรัสรู้ ธรรมและทรงสอนธรรมอันประเสริฐยิ่งเหนือมนุษย์คนใดในโลก... ในการเผยแผ่ธรรมะของพระพุทธองค์นั้น ก็มิได้ทรงบังคับ ให้ใครเชื่อพระองค์ ได้แต่ทรงสอนให้แต่ละคนรู้จักศึกษาพัฒนาคน เอง เพื่อความหลุดพ้น โดยพระพุทธองค์เป็นผู้ชี้แนะแนวทางให้แล้ว นำไปปฏิบัติกันเอง ดังพุทธพจน์ที่ว่า อัตตาหิ อัตโน นาโถ ตน แลเป็นที่พึ่งแห่งตน ๑๘ Kalyanamitra.org กุมภาพันธ์ ๒๕ : i .
