Phammakāya Monks are Highly Respectable A Buddhist monk is one who has been physi- cally and intellectually ordained to undergo the process of disciplinary training and education. His body, speech and mind are educated by the 227 moral regulations. In Fact, the monk who has been well-trained and has been able to give laymen some Buddha's teachings to lead them happy lives will generally be highly res- pected. Quinine has taken a notice of the monks and said, "I really respect the monks at Wat Phra Dham- makaya... they have good conduct...er... I mean they're gentle and serene... they're very friendly. Well, another thing... they teach Dhamma. Every Sunday, a large group of people go and listen to the Vice Abbot's teachings... I think this is the right way to do. Even though the week day when some people question him... he always replies to them... he tells them what should do, what shouldn't do, what's right, what's wrong. Above all, he answered all of my questions logically... and he can speak English. Frankly, I would like to say that the monks at Wat Phra Dhammakaya are dif- ferent from the monks either in Singapore of some temples I know in Bangkok." I'm sure that to exercise yoca including appropriate maditating must be the best relaxation for Singaporeans. Compassion Can be Felt by Heart While staying at Wat Phra Dhammakaya, Quinine has some opportunities to pay respect to the Abbot- Luang Poh Dhammajayo. When she was asked about her attitude towards him, she happily said, "Well, I'm really impressed the Abbot's per- sonality. He's humble. He's so friendly to every- body. Though I don't know the language, I un- derstand him. You know... I feel as I know him for a long time. I feel comfort- able to see him. I do res- pect him. His kindness shines on his face all along he talks to people..." Her two friends also pay highly respect to the Abbot. Negeenim talked about the Abbot thus, "He's very friendly. He looks very smart. I think he's a man of wis- dom... very great and comfortable to see him." Anne said, "He looks very bright. Very friendly. He's filled with compassion for every- one... think... he has sense of humour... he makes everyone happy when they listen to him. I know though I can't un- derstand Thai." An Impressive Temple When she was asked about her attitude towards Wat Phra Dhammakāya during her stay there nearly a month, she fluently res- ponded that, "Oh! I am very im- pressed. Wat Phra Dham- makaya is very clean. The scenery is very beautiful and peaceful. Everything in the temple is wellorga- nized and systematic. The monasteries covered with lots of big trees seem really tranquil. The people work- ing for the Wat are active, responsible, helpful, hum- ble, and above all they are very friendly, especially the Asā - Kalyānamittas. They are really friendly... er...their expression has strong influence on my mind." "ah!...They are lady-like I feel that I'm one of the family there. I feel more than I'm at home. I can talk to the monks and everybody...you know ...normally, I'm a very shy person. I used to find it very difficult to talk to someone ...but there, I find it so easy to open my mouth...it's easy while I talk to a person ...but it's a pity I don't understand Thai. When they teach me they always laugh and always have smiling faces. It seems that everybody gives me a warm welcome though we don't understand what we said to each other.
