WAT PRADHAMMAKAYA Crowds began drifting toward the vast gathering place about four P.M. Thousands of black a meter high candle-torch poles lined the grassy landscape. The focus was the immense grassy terraced mound sur- rounded by a five metres high golden stature of Buddha under a soaring rainbow arch. Soon the terrace were filled by a thousand orange-robed monks while each candle-torch was paired with white-clad devotee. My group arrived just as the ceremonies were about to begin about a half-hour before sunset.
