She would meditate with them as they started out on their new task for a while, before retiring from the workshop. Even outside the room, she still maintained the subtlety of her mind as she was going about her personal chores. On the outside her body moved about its tasks, but on the inside her mind remained steadfastly focused on inner wisdom. When it was time to go on shift, the others would turn up at the last moment, but Khun Yay would be there fifteen minutes before time, in order to hear the conclusions the Great Abbot made at the end of the outgoing shift in case there was something she could learn from. This is why it is said that of all the meditators, it was Khun Yay who absorbed most of the knowledge known to the Great Abbot. She let no meditation knowledge pass her by unheeded. She knew how each session began and ended — and even how it was transmitted to the next shift. In those days it was routine for the Great Abbot to train his meditators to explore the realms of heaven and hell. However, those allowed to study in such a way had to be earnest and self-motivated to develop their own adeptness in ‘seeing and knowing’ to keep up with the depth of questions he was asking. If anyone was not diligent and focused, the Great Abbot would reprimand them with the word ‘embers!’— because embers have to be poked and prodded continually if you are going to rely on them to keep a fire going. Similarly, the ‘embers’ amongst the meditators needed continual prodding from the Abbot to make any progress in their meditation at all. Khun Yay, however, had never let herself be chided with the word ‘embers!’
