Everybody was amused saying, “Her surname is ‘khonnokhoong’ (meaning peacock feather) and she has been the one to win the peacock-feather fan!” The fan, however, was to stay with her only a few hours, because Khun Yay Thongsuk came asking after it. Khun Yay Thongsuk wanted to give the fan as a meritorious gift. Khun Yay wanted the merit more than the fan so gladly gave it to her old teacher. In fact it wasn’t just the fact that Khun Yay Thongsuk had been her teacher. If anyone came asking for anything she had, she would give things away without a glimmer of regret. She loved to give more than to hoard. She didn’t care for the external trappings of wealth, but only for the inner wealth of Dhamma attainment.” Everyone, even the Great Abbot, knew mun- dane things were the last thing on Khun Yay’s mind and one day he tested her with a new sort of question.
