Some even praise those who are out and out gangsters. Thus Khun Yay made her decisions on the basis of what was best rather than what would be popular or necessarily convenient. She used to say: "All my life I’ve had a very simple way of deciding what to do. I never do anything to please anyone, unless it is to please the Lord Buddha himself – because the Buddha is blessed with the ability to discern right and wrong, appropriate and inappropriate, wholesomeness and unwholesomeness. Thus I just do according to what the Buddha taught – and if anyone else reprimands me for that, even if it is everybody in town, I remain unmoved by their protests.
