Khun Yai had a radiant complexion and a smile on her face. At that time she was fifty-three — but even though she looked thin and unimposing with no special presence, she had a sparkle in her eye that set her apart from other people. She had eyes which spoke of deep compassion, determination and inner accomplishment. The student recognized her immediately as the teacher he had been looking for all his life — the one who was going to reveal the answers to the questions on his mind. That day, he immediately wanted to blurt out his questions and have them answered. He wanted to ask about averting the bombs. However, Khun Yai was on her way to a previous engagement. She just returned his greeting, saying, “Today I’ve got an appointment I have to go to — we’ll have to keep the talk for another day. I’ve got a funeral to attend.” Even to have heard that much from Khun Yai already raised the student’s hopes. He willed tomorrow to come quickly and the very next morning returned to the temple expectantly. He had been looking for an answer to these questions since his childhood, but in vain. He had taken as many opportunities as he could to visit renowned temples to learn their teachings and search out answers — but the ones he received failed to satisfy him. Khun Yai answered these questions so clearly that day he was convinced to study and practice Dhamma with her. Later on, after term started the student came to meditate with her every day. It was quite a long journey for him to travel from Kasetsart University, crossing the Chao Phaya River to Wat Paknam
