In the olden days Khun Yay would demonstrate how to clean the toilets personally. However, for later generations, proper use of the toilets became inte- grated into the textbook of Buddhist culture taught to all newcomers staying at the temple. Indeed, new- comers continue to be impressed by the cleanliness of the temple’s restrooms even down to the present day. Some had never seen such a clean restroom at other public facilities before. It was volunteers’ pride to clean the temple’s restrooms, which they called “cleaning the celestial mansion [vimāna], with her secret that “the deeper you clean into the toilet bowl, the brighter your mind.” The toilets which Khun Y ay took the most care of were the ‘toilet block of twenty’ almost opposite her own kuti. She would lead the volunteers herself, teaching them to scrub ‘all the way down the U-bend’. Armed with a scotchbrite and washing powder they raced to complete the task.
