loving-kindness and warmth. Her eyes reflected the
compassion, sincerity and warmth within her mind
touching everyone’s heart. She was the kind of senior
citizen that everyone wanted to be close to.
The hot herbal tea placed at Khun Yays side was left
to turn cold many times. Khun Yay had to continue
giving guidance to her visitors although she was so
tired — but she still kept doing her duty with a joyful
smile. It was the duty of a leader to many people on the
Dhamma path. She never showed any signs of fatigue
and never left early.
Some visitors also came for audience with Khun Yay
at weekdays. These people usually were the emergency
cases. They came to wait either in the kitchen or the
walkways. Khun Yay never ignored them, she was will-
ing to help and give guidance. There was a young lady
who rushed to see Khun Yay while she was crossing the
road to the office. Khun Yay asked her gently “What’s
the matter?” “Would you have time for me? Could we
talk at Tusita Hall?” she asked with sorrowful eyes.
Although not well herself, Khun Yay walked to Tusita
Hall to listen her. The young lady had problems with
her family. She cried as she told her story. Khun Yay
listened to her for a long time and told her:
“It is hard to be born as a human. Our present
life is affected by past karma — by what we have
done to ourselves in past lives. Thus, you must
be patient and keep doing good deeds. Please
be patient. We don’t live so long and we must
all die.”
The lady added that there used to be a Buddhist nun
who told her that she used to be a monkey in her past
life. Khun Yay replied quickly:
